Behind the Design: Kitchen in the Pines

Read on to discover the behind the scenes of our Kitchen in the Pines project.

An oversized island and bespoke hood wrapped in venetian plaster anchor this kitchen redesign in Incline Village. We chose a soft beige tone for the cabinetry that complements the natural veining in the quartzite stone which clads the countertops and backsplash. We balanced the space with the addition of a window to embrace the abundant natural light. With the pine forest just outside, the effect is like living in a chic treehouse.

The Layout and Redesign

This kitchen before we redesigned it felt dark, cramped, and uninspiring. We wanted to open it up, let more light in, and refresh everything so it became a space of joy and gathering. We added a window in the back corner to let more light in and add some symmetry to the space, and removed excess upper cabinets. We maintained an island but made it one level to make it more functional, and installed a panel-ready refrigerator to blend seamless with the cabinetry.

The Mood Board

Inspired by subtle textures, raw stoneware, and crisp mountain air. The clients wanted to feel like they were sitting in the landscape of Tahoe.

Sometimes you need to add a window…

We felt the existing layout of the kitchen didn’t take advantage of the stunning natural scenery just outside, and the space needed more light, so we added a window in the corner and completely reconfigured the cabinetry.
A window was added here:

Much better!

The Materials

The material story for this project is all soft neutrals and textures, sourced with quality and longevity in mind.

The Countertops

A quartzite stone with incredible natural veining sourced in Reno clads the countertops and backsplash. We chose these slabs in particular for their intricate details and coloring.

The Storage Cabinets

We chose a bubble glass for a few cabinets for variety and so the clients could choose to have certain dishware on display while not having too much pressure to be overly perfect or organized.

The Cabinetry & Panel-Ready Appliances

A soft beige cabinetry finish sets a neutral (but never boring!) tone for the cabinet surrounds, while Rustic Hickory wood graces the island for a grounding moment.

The Hardware

We chose aged brass handles and pulls from Armac Martin for the hardware throughout the kitchen. It’s all hand cast in England and so beautiful it’s like jewelry for the home!

The Lighting

Antique brass sconces from McGee & Co. provided the perfect punctuation on either side of the range.

Venetian Plaster

We tapped our friends at Rebel Venetian to cover the range hood in a subtle texture that provided just the right amount of interest. They’re such artisans and incredible to watch at work…
